There is One Logical Choice for the Winner of the Royal Rumble. And his Name is Drew McIntyre.
Ah yes, the Royal Rumble. The annual hour long fiesta in WWE in which 30 men enter, and only one man stands tall. After 29 men have been thrown over the top rope, the winner gets a prize, and a pretty good one at that. A main event match for a world championship at Wrestlemania.
Since November, speculation always runs rampant as to who could be the man that could stand tall at the January event. Who could be The One? Rumors have ranged from Roman Reigns to Kevin Owens to CM Punk to even former UFC champion Cain Velasquez. After a few episodes of Raw and Smackdown go by every holiday season, people can get a good feel as to who the winner of the Royal Rumble will be. As of this writing, Roman Reigns is a heavy favorite to win and go on to face "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt for the Universal Championship at Wrestlemania.
In 2015, Roman Reigns won the Royal Rumble and went on to face Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 31 in a match that absolutely no one wanted. Fortunately for us, Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase and saved us from a terrible ending to a halfway decent pay per view. If Roman wins his second Rumble in 2020, his match with The Fiend will be a very similar scenario to the one that played out five years prior. Everyone will cheer for Wyatt, myself included. So I do not think Roman needs to win another Rumble. Plus, if he did, the boos from Houston will be Astro-nomically loud (see what I did there?). The crowd does not want another Roman Reigns Wrestlemania moment, I can assure you that. Meanwhile on Raw, Brock Lesnar is the current WWE Champion, and he has entered the match itself. So who should face Brock for the title at 'Mania?
The guy that is destined to be a World Champion, and the guy that is one of the most over wrestlers in the company right now, The Scottish Psychopath, Drew McIntyre.
The WWE is slowly turning McIntyre into a babyface, and that is a role that he shines in. Drew is a go-getter, he is ruthless, cunning, and sly. Yet he plays into the crowd, and he is fantastic on the mic. Drew has never had that one big win to define his career, and the Royal Rumble is the place to do it. Last Monday on Raw, he defeated No Way Jose, destroyed his conga line, and then cut a promo talking about how he's never gotten an opportunity at a world title. He declared his entry into the Rumble, and called out people like Reigns, AJ Styles, Randy Orton, and the current champion Lesnar. He dropped the mic, and exited the ring to a massive ovation from the crowd.
Picture this: Brock enters at number 1 as the champion, with the other superstars entering over the course of the next 30 minutes or so. Once you hit the 20s, that's when the potential winners start coming out. Reigns, Kevin Owens, Styles, Orton, and our guy, McIntyre. Imagine a final four of Reigns, McIntyre, Lesnar, and an NXT superstar of choice (WWE HAS to make NXT look good in the Royal Rumble. They will not be taken seriously if the company throws them by the wayside). Reigns eliminates said NXT superstar, and then you hear from the loudspeakers at Minute Maid Park:
IF YOU SMELLLLLLL, WHAT THE ROCK, IS COOKING!
Out comes The Rock to try to help Roman win his second rumble. Instead, the interference backfires, and Reigns is taken out of the match by Lesnar. From behind, McIntyre eliminates Brock to win the match. Drew celebrates his Rumble victory as the show fades to black. Or, you can have Brock and McIntyre fight for a little before McIntyre gets his big win, and officially becomes a crowd favorite. It really is not that hard to book this thing right. Then, of course, in the main event of Wrestlemania 36, Drew McIntyre takes out Brock Lesnar with a Claymore to become the new, and first ever, British WWE Champion. Roman Reigns can face The Rock in a separate match on the card that can easily be hyped up. Trust me, Wrestlemania 36 can be WWE's best one yet if they tried hard enough.
Of course, you do have to remember the company we're dealing with. McIntyre will not win the Royal Rumble, and instead it will most likely go to Reigns, a Superstar who has been forced down our throats as the face of the company. even though the WWE Universe has shown time and time again that he is not the guy they want at the top.
If WWE knew their audience and truly cared about what the fans wanted, someone fresh and new is the way to go. Especially in a huge stadium like Minute Maid Park, the cheers for Drew McIntyre winning the Royal Rumble will be deafening. Make the right call, WWE. Because if you don't, AEW will be waiting.
