Predicting Every NFL Team's Week One Starting QB in 2020
Sports has been absolutely killed this week. Some may think that killed is a little bit of an exaggeration, but it isn't. The NBA, NHL, MLS, Premier League, MLB, and NASCAR seasons have all been suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping across the globe. A good portion of you reading this use sports as a coping mechanism in crises like these. Now, that coping mechanism is gone. What to do?
Well, if you've noticed something in that list, the NFL is still (technically) going strong. The new league year is set to begin next Wednesday with free agency. However, with league tampering set to begin Monday, many free agent signings are going to leak before Wednesday. Many strong position players are available. Yet more than ever, it seems like many veteran quarterbacks are available this year than in years past.
With that being said, I'm going to try to use my psychic abilities to predict every NFL team's Week One starter for next season. This is going to be based on rumors and rumblings that are happening throughout the league right now. With that, I will add one sentence (but no more) as to why I think each team is going to start that quarterback. Please read the sentences. You will thank me later.
AFC East:
Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen
Allen provided the Bills with a 10-win season in 2019, and he's only expected to take another step forward.
Miami Dolphins: Ryan Fitzpatrick
I do expect the Dolphins to draft one Justin Herbert, but he will need to sit behind Fitzpatrick for a few games before stepping into action.
New England Patriots: Tom Brady
Getting the easiest free agent pick out of the way, I can't see a scenario in which TB12 leaves his 20-year home.
New York Jets: Sam Darnold
Should be a no brainer here, as the Jets continue to put their trust in their 2018 1st round draft pick.
AFC North:
Baltimore Ravens: Lamar Jackson
If I had the option to, I'd stick with the defending NFL MVP as well.
Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow
Cincinnati takes Burrow with pick #1, solidifying himself as the future of the Bengals for years to come.
Cleveland Browns: Baker Mayfield
Baker did take a step backwards last year, but this should not hold him back from sliding right into the starting job.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger
"Back and better than ever" was the words uttered by Big Ben during the offseason; let's see if he can prove it.
AFC South:
Houston Texans: Deshaun Watson
Watson has MVP potential, and he is a slam dunk as Houston's best quarterback they've ever had.
Indianapolis Colts: Philip Rivers
First big switch here, as Rivers signs with Indy next week and takes over the reigns from Jacoby Brissett.
Jacksonville Jaguars: Gardner Minshew II
Was going to say Nick Foles, but Minshew performed substantially better last year than his Super Bowl MVP winning counterpart.
Tennessee Titans: Ryan Tannehill
Tannehill returns to Tennessee on the $25 million franchise tag, and he gets the job from Week 1 this year.
AFC West:
Denver Broncos: Drew Lock
Lock was my sleeper of last year's QB class, and he did not disappoint in the Mile High City.
Kansas City Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes
Fifty touchdowns two years ago followed up with a 26 touchdown campaign and a Super Bowl MVP trophy make Mahomes the best quarterback right now in the NFL.
Las Vegas Raiders: Derek Carr
Coach Gruden would be crazy dipping his toes in this year's QB market when he has an already proven quarterback in Carr.
Los Angeles Chargers: Marcus Mariota
My shocker in the AFC, as Mariota starts for a few weeks before handing over the reigns to LA's first round pick, Tua Tagovailoa.
NFC East:
Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott
Dak gets his payday from Jerry Jones in Dallas, and he will put all of the rumors of a departure to rest.
New York Giants: Daniel Jones
Tough spot here for the G-Men, but Jones was their first round pick from last year and should continue to start for Big Blue despite a strong QB and free agent class.
Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz
With that big time extension Wentz got from the Eagles, Howie Roseman has committed to him being the go to guy.
Washington Redskins: Dwayne Haskins
There's no way they draft Tua at #2, right?
NFC North:
Chicago Bears: Andy Dalton
It'll be a battle between Dalton and Trubisky for the Week 1 starting job, and it goes to the man that has more playoff experience.
Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford
Detroit would be out of their minds to trade Stafford and give control to someone else.
Green Bay Packers: Aaron Rodgers
Despite a down year last season, Rodgers is still one of the top options in the league.
Minnesota Vikings: Kirk Cousins
Entering a contract year, Captain Kirk will lead the Viking ship after last season's success.
NFC South:
Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan
Ryan was one of the few positives of last year's Falcons season, and he still has what it takes to be a quality NFL starter.
Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton
Matt Rhule has stated that he wants to work with Newton, and at a 19 million dollar cap hit, is one of the cheaper options in the league.
New Orleans Saints: Drew Brees
Brees has announced he will be coming back to the Saints next year, which should be great news for Who Dat Nation.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Teddy Bridgewater
It seems like Bruce Arians is noncommittal on Jameis Winston, and Touchdown Teddy can be someone that Arians can work with not just for one year, but for several.
NFC West:
Arizona Cardinals: Kyler Murray
The Cardinals' #1 overall pick from last year absolutely keeps a hold on his starting spot.
Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff
After last year's 5 year 125 million dollar extension, there's no way that the Rams would be able to move on from Goff.
San Francisco 49ers: Jimmy Garoppolo
There's rumors of him being shipped out before his new extension kicks in, but ultimately Shanahan and the defending NFC Champs keep a hold on Jimmy G.
Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson
Wilson has been a Top 5 quarterback in the NFL for the better part of a decade, and there's no signs he's slowing down.
And there you have it, my guesses on every team's Week One starter. The 2020 NFL season can very well be a time of change, a passing of the torch, if you will. Could as many quarterbacks be on the move as you think? It's going to be interesting to see, for sure.
Do not forget to wash your hands after reading this. We have to make sure that we get to Week 1 of the NFL season, first.
